In 1983, Ted and Margo Hicks saw a lawnmower marching group in the "Doo-Dah" parade in Pasadena, CA and thought it was funny. So they stole the idea. In the 1983 Spanishtown "Cats" parade, they forced about ten guys to put on wide ties and Fedoras, grab their respective Lawn Boys, and mow down the street under the banner of "Cat Shredders." When the parade was over, the Hickses walked away in shame, never to return. But the rest of the Shredders imagined they were a big hit and decided to repeat their "triumph" every year, mutating to adapt to each successive Spanishtown parade theme:
